I just discovered a group from the 80's, Stormtroopers of Death (S.O.D.) that I'm really, really interested in. The group, which was a side project by the guys in Anthrax back in 85, mixed hardcore punk with thrash and made this crazy album, Speak English or Die.
It's funny, one of the songs off the album, Chromatic Death, has a riff that brings to mind System of a Down's B.Y.O.B. almost immediately.
I recently got a book called the Sound of the Beast, that tells a condensed history of heavy metal. It's been quite interesting to me, because since I only started listening to music in 89, there are a lot of things that I am discovering after-the-fact. So with this book, I'm going back and discovering more underground groups that influenced the music scene at the time, but didn't have the same staying power like Metallica or Megadeth or any of the other big groups did. I'm just glad there's deezer to listen to things without having to buy or waste time downloading stuff that's not necessarily keeping-worthy.
